All-on-4 vs dentures: which is right for you?

Fixed teeth on implants or removable dentures. How they compare for chewing, comfort, bone health and cost.
Short answer: dentures are the lowest-cost way to replace a full arch, but they sit on your gums, can move when you eat, and do nothing to stop jawbone shrinkage. All-on-4 fixes a full bridge of teeth to four implants. It costs more upfront, but it does not come out, you can chew much harder foods, and the implants keep loading the bone.

Why dentures get loose over time

When teeth are lost, the bone that held their roots no longer gets the pressure of chewing, and it slowly shrinks. A denture rests on the gums over that bone, so as the ridge gets smaller the denture fits worse. That is why many denture wearers need adhesive, relines and new dentures every few years, and why the face can start to look “collapsed” around the mouth.

Implants work like artificial roots. Chewing forces go through the implants into the bone, and studies consistently show that implant-supported teeth give a much stronger bite than conventional dentures.

When dentures still make sense

  • Budget: dentures are the most affordable full-arch option.
  • Health: some medical conditions make implant surgery unsafe. Your dentist and physician decide this together.
  • Short term: a denture can be a temporary solution while you plan implants.

There is also a middle option: an implant-retained overdenture (“snap-on denture”) that clips onto 2–4 implants. It is more stable than a regular denture but still removable.

Who is a good candidate for All-on-4?

All-on-4 is designed for people who have lost most of their teeth in an arch, have failing teeth that cannot be saved, or are tired of loose dentures. Because the back implants are placed at an angle, many patients with bone loss can still get fixed teeth without major bone grafting. A 3D X-ray shows exactly how much bone you have.
